Why time block?

Time blocking is an important part of your day-it not only helps create good habits, it helps you identify and understand where your derailers are and how to prevent them. When you are doing your time-blocking, there are a few things you should consider:

  • Time blocking tools are based on what works for the individual-some like very detailed paper templates, others like basic paper templates and some like them as an electronic document. Pick what works for you and what you will stick with.

  • Think about how you already time block. You have a certain time to pick the kids up from school, sports, Dr appointments and so on. They are non-negotiable. Why can’t you make the time to grow your business non-negotiable?

  • Don’t think as time blocking as an all or nothing, your day changes and so will how you manage to it. For example, it’s okay to move the time you have blocked to call your spere or outreach if you have a listing/buyer appointment that is scheduled for the same time. What’s not okay is if you don’t make the time within your day to make your outreach happen.

  • It is perfectly acceptable to set boundaries and expectations with your work life as well as personal life. Time blocking is a great way to have those in your life understand that at certain times, your availability may not be immediate…but within an hour or so.

  • You should time block your “me time”-it is important that you take time during the day to refresh, recharge and refocus. Whether you block time for they gym, spiritual time, or time for lunch and I don’t mean eating in the car…taking even 30 minutes makes a difference in your attitude, energy level and productivity.

  • Benefits of time blocking:

    • Clarifying your day-what is a must do, what is I should do and what is a nice to do. You must get a contract signed, you should do your CE before the end of the year (you have time to complete it) and it’s nice to check social media to see the latest cat videos-but that can be a time drain. You will be surprised how much wasted time there is during the day once you are committed to clarifying your time.

    • Understand and manage your derailers, identity and remove them. If you have a tendency to move from task to task without completing one at a time (think shiny object syndrome) make a list by priority, do the hard ones first and remove them. The sense of accomplishment will help you with the easier tasks.

    • Time blocking increases productivity and accomplishments. Isn’t that what we all want!

    • Time blocking holds you accountable. You are the one who sets the time, controls the influence and makes it happen.

  • Helps you identify critical from non-critical activities. Prioritize critical over non and you will be surprised how much time you get back in your day.
